Hair Remedies to Survive NYFW

The styles seen on the runways at NYFW inspire our hair aspirations for weeks to come. From ombré to braids to the perfect tousled wave, we go to great lengths to replicate the runway looks.

Experimentation is great, but before you reach for that hot iron, bleach or extensions, take a minute to think about the consequences – be ready with a repair strategy…

“Go to your stylist with a realistic, wearable vision for change,” says Rebecca Kazin, MD, FAAD, dermatologist and founder of H+ Haircare. “Extreme colors and avant-garde styles are challenging care for and coif. Studies show that many models wear wigs and extensions on the runway.”

If you just can’t resist mirroring that runway look, keep Dr. Kazin’s tips in mind:

Ombré & Sombre – These styles require bleaching the ends of hair, which are already the driest and most damaged. The healthiest hair is the hair closest to your scalp. Keep hair within one shade lighter than your natural color to minimize damage.

Extensions & Wigs – These hair enhancers cause cuticle damage and breakage, plus the friction and stress put on your hair hurts the quality. Apply all extensions to dry hair to avoid excessive damage/loss and style with cool air.

Heat Styling – Whether you’re straightening, curling, crimping or waving, hot air leads to chronic damage to cuticle, frizz and burned tresses. Get to the root of the problem with a hydrating scalp mask. Mix avocado and coconut oil into a paste and apply to hair. Put a warm towel over the mask and leave on overnight for a nourishing moisture and vitamin infusion.

Get Her Red Carpet @Lancomeusa Makeup: Julia Roberts #LancomeRedCarpet

Julia Roberts is one of those women who makes glam look effortless. The star wore an Elie Saab beaded dress on the red carpet and a classic makeup look to the 2014 Emmy Awards.

Her makeup artist, Genevieve Herr, gave the Lancôme Ambassadress and nominee a radiant, natural look with a bronze eye and sunkissed cheek to compliment her navy beaded dress.

Here are all the products she used on the award winning actress.

White Hot Beauty: Robin Wright

Is white the new black? It certainly is having a moment on the red carpet. We love it but whats the right makeup for this look? Robin Wright looks haute in her white suit with a bold eye look.

We asked celebrity makeup artist Tricia Sawyer, who created the look for Robin Wright for the 2014 Emmys Awards just how she created using Orlane products

I began by applying Orlane Super-Moisturizing Light Cream to her skin with a sponge and pressing it into her skin, concentrating a lot under the eyes.  Then I went back with the Absolute Skin Recovery Care Eye Contour and applied that under her eyes as well.  Your skin gets so stressed out going through these events that keeping it really moisturized is key to having the makeup last all night.  With that said, it can’t be too oily or greasy; these two products have a very wearable, lovely consistency that work well with having makeup applied over them.

For her foundation, we went very light with Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua and concealer.  Then I powdered her face with Orlane Transparent Loose Powder using a brush and concentrating on the T-Zone.  I really like this powder in particular because it’s so finely milled so it doesn’t give a powdery effect, it just takes the shine away which is perfect for the red carpet.

I used Orlane Bronzer to contour her face with a small angled blush brush, running it along her jawline and the hollows of her cheeks.  Then I dusted Chanel blush in Rose Bronze and In Love on her cheekbones.

To really make her eyes pop, I used Mac eyeliner in Power Surge and then Orlane Volume Care Mascara.  I applied one coat of mascara, and then individual lashes, and then went back with another coat of mascara.  This mascara is great because it doesn’t flake at all which is super important.”

Red Carpet Beauty: Sarah Hyland

Sarah Hyland is a red carpet beauty! We loved Sarah’s custom made Christian Siriano dress and her complimenting beauty look so much that we got the skinny on her hair and makeup from her glam squad.

Celebrity makeup artist Allan Avendano created the look for Sarah Hyland for tonight’s 2014 Emmy Awards.

“I prepped Sarah’s skin with Orlane Super-Moisturizing Light Cream and Absolute Skin Recovery Care Eye Contour.  The perfect base for any makeup!

Her beautiful skin tone was accentuated with Votre Vu Silk Stockings lotion.  It moisturized and made her glow!”

Ryan Richman partnered with Dove to style the gorgeous look on Sarah Hyland.

“As a team, we were inspired by old Hollywood glamour. I never want to be too literal with inspiration so we kept the look soft and natural to keep it modern.

·         I began by applying 3-4 pumps of Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Nourishing Treatment to her damp hair to add softness and shine without weighing it down and to protect it while blow drying.

·         Before blow drying each section, I applied a pump of Dove Frizz-Free Shine Serum to smooth frizz and fly-aways.

·         Then I began blow drying large sections of hair using a large boar bristle round brush, directing the hair away from the face. A boar bristle brush is great for polishing and smoothing the hair while still maintaining body and some natural texture. When styling a ponytail or bun you should blow dry the hair towards the center point of where the hair will be put up, and use a straightening iron on medium heat to smooth any cowlicks or kinks around the hairline.

·         Next, I brushed the hair upwards towards the top of the head. I used Dove Style+Care Extra Hold Hairspray as I was brushing to keep the hair in place. A great way to smooth fly-aways while brushing is to spray hairspray directly onto the brush.

·         Then I secured the hair in a ponytail with an elastic. To make tying your ponytail easier, bend over forwards and gather the hair instead of trying to reach high above your head.

·         To add texture to your bun, back comb the ponytail with a brush and spray with hairspray. Finally, twist and wrap the hair into a bun and secure with bobby pins. You can pull out small pieces of hair with your fingertips or a rattail comb for an edgy undone look.”

Travel Beauty: How I Tamed My Tresses On A Road Trip In Texas!

Just this week I embarked on a road trip across Texas! The goal of the trip was visit 3 major cities: Dallas, Austin and San Antonio; try new things and make new friends along the way!

I was so excited to partner up with my girl Lizza aka XOXOLizza on our awesome travel and beauty adventure. We took turns in the driver seat of the Toyota Corolla, Prius and Camry. During our travels we got to check out a Best Western Hotel in each city.

Of course we made time for beauty, trying out some favorites and new products from John Frieda to tame out tresses! We put our hair to the test on this trip and cant wait to share tip and tricks (and cheats) we used on the road.

For details on my road trip journey see the bottom of this post for links.

As soon as I landed in the Dallas-Fort Worth airport I realized that keeping my hair under control would be a huge challenge. Texas in the summer months is hot and humid with temps averaging 97-102 (at least while I was in town). Over the next week I was on the road driving with precious little time for getting glam. However pretty much every night there were networking events, parties and even a gala. The name of the game would be humidity defying style!

Here is my in-flight before photo.

And here is my 1st night party look!

Want to know my recipe for luscious curls on the road?

1.       I created a great foundation for the hairstyle by washing my hair with John Frieda Frizz Ease Smooth Start Shampoo and Conditioner.

2.       While my hair was still wet, I applied John Frieda Frizz Ease Original Six Effects Serum for a frizz-free base, since this multi-purpose product has six different benefits in each drop. I love that it not only smooths and hydrates hair but also provides heat protection, which is so essential.

3.       Afterward, I untangled my hair with a vent brush and blow-dried it using a big, round brush. (Note, this is the part I am not so good at but I also let it partially air dry to cut down on time with the blow-drier).

4.       I divided the hair in different sections and used John Frieda 1 inch curling iron to create tight soft curls to harmonize with my makeup and dress.

5.       After I curled each section, I applied a couple drops of John Frieda Frizz Ease Nourishing Oil Elixir, which is a personal favorite of mine to eliminate frizz and add shine.

6.       To finalize the look and lock in the waves I used John Frieda Luxurious Volume All Day Hold Hairspray, perfect to fight the humidity that was present and also to keep the look intact.
